RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY PRESENTS – KINGDOM (USA / Fade To Mind / Night Slugs
with Oscar Key Sung (live), Michael Ozone, Air Max ’97, Mexicali and ESC DJ’s
With the dust barely settled on the January club night with LA beatsmith Daedelus, Red Bull Music Academy is ready to reveal Brooklyn-bred, LA-based DJ/producer Kingdom as the February headliner act for their monthly Club Night series.
The man born Ezra Rubin had a breakout year in 2013, thanks to his seven-track release Vertical XL, on the Fade To Mind label he runs alongside close friends and collaborators Nguzunguzu, Total Freedom and Prince William. The breakout track on that breakout release was Bank Head (featuring Kalela), an atmospheric slice of emotive bass music which not only took out top spot in Dummy Mag’s “The 20 best tracks of 2013” countdown but also charted highly with Pitchfork, Mixmag and FACT.
It was another signpost in a career which began to attract notice in 2006 through a pair of mixtape releases which effortlessly fused grime, hip-hop and R&B. You’ll still hear that R&B influence in his DJ sets today – he’s not afraid to drop his own edits of Beyoncé and Gwen Stefani into more house- and techno-inclined mixes – though it’s his incredibly detailed and meticulously crafted productions that are his calling card to the world. And he’s attracted the interest of some of the best in the business, with A-Trak’s Fool’s Gold and Bok Bok’s Night Slugs two of the labels his releases have called home.
Kingdom touches down in Australia for two dates courtesy of RBMA, hitting Sydney’s Goodgod Small Club on Thursday 13th February with Wordlife (live), Cliques, Bad Ezzy and Max Gosford on support duties before heading south to Boney in Melbourne, where Oscar Key Sung (live), Michael Ozone, Air Max ’97, Mexicali and ESC DJ’s will be setting the stage on Friday 14th February.
RSVP for free entry is essential (though entry is on a first come, first served basis), with both nights to be recorded for broadcast on RBMA Radio.
Friday 14 February – Boney (Melbourne) – Doors 9pm
with Oscar Key Sung (live), Michael Ozone, Air Max ’97, Mexicali and ESC DJ’s.
